My absolute favorite logo of all time is the mighty American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976 logo from 1976. Designed by Bruce Blackburn in 1974.

I’ve got the thing tattooed on me. That freaked out Sagi Haviv of Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv when I met him in Atlanta this one time. NASA had it on the John F. Kennedy Space Center! I first saw it as a kid at 4th of July celebrations. Can BARELY remember seeing it on a wild family trip to Florida in the early ’80s. In my early adulthood, I saw it on Mercury Rev albums, and that ignited something in me.

This is a bit of a weird one. Am I allowed to print my favorite logo of all time on things? Turns out, we all own this. It was commissioned by the government, for the country. That’s us. We paid for this one with tax dollars, just like we paid for the NASA worm and the EPA logo and so many others.

I just want it on a t-shirt. So I’m going for it. Whipped up a decal kit too. Been too many years I’ve been hemming and hawing on this one. Finally went for it. Printed with permission from Bruce Blackburn’s daughter, Stephanie.

ROM OUR INSTAGRAM POST ON DECEMBER 23, 2023: “Just a little Friday morning warm-up vector sun thingie. Using simple 90-degree circle segments. Color shapes, a little context and a thick-lined version. “Fourth Flare” is nothing more than something made up on the spot, to see how it works in a little Avant Garde Demi lock-up. It‘s Friday, and we’re laying LOW in an undisclosed location, in the shadow of a large mountain. The pencil sketches keep coming, so we act on them. Not that we’ve seen the sun in the last bunch of days, so this little sketch was from memory of that big star some 91,410,000 miles away, as these words go to print. Maybe the clouds will part for just a second and that big sun will show itself? Maybe hot. Hard to say.”

And a flood of emails, DMs and yelling passers-by hanging out of PT Cruiser windows came in after I posted this. Stuff along these lines: “Where’s the poster?!”

I’ve always been fascinated by anything Spirit of ’76 or 1776-related. Going all the way to Dr. J and the Sixers and how Philly used it, or dramatic illustrations of frost-bit militiamen freezing their asses off in those little huts in Valley Forge, fighting back the Redcoats.

And this design came from our USPS “Star Ribbon” stamp outtakes. Stars, bars, ’76, thick lines...messing around with that stuff on the way up to submitting initial designs for the stamp. This one didn’t make the cut. This poster was made for the fans of the stamp. Plain and simple. And that really riles me up to even have to write that out.

And to be CRYSTAL CLEAR: This poster was NOT designed in some “storm the capitol” kind of way. Fuck those guys and their goopy 1776 t-shirts, violence, misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia, intolerance and skewed sense of so-called Patriotism.

AS ORANGE AS POSSIBLE: We’ve had a good run with our TJB × DDC roster of product collabs these last couple of years. We came out flying with the Elko”pocket knife and sold out a couple runs right away. Then it was that big DDC Merchmas offering a couple years back with the Folsom and a slew of TJB × DDC goodies, including the very, very sharp Throwflake! Back in 2018 I got a call from one Erik Johnston at CSA Design. And he laid this one on me, “French Paper was interested in doing an “Aaron Draplin” promotion!” WHOA! We put our heads together and went digging in the archives. Kids send in drawings of me, right? Always weird, always awesome and I logged every single one of them along the way. A good chunk of them went into our DDC book, but others were kept on ice for the next big thing.
