DDC Drawing Club

Been drawing a lot. In my Field Notes and on my iPad. Facts are stubborn things.

And this goes ALL the way back when I was a little kid. I loved drawing then, and have to remind myself of those beginnings from time to time, lambasted by “the quickness” of daily life. Slow shit down and get weird on paper. It’s not like I ever forget the magic of it, just let the pressures of “making a buck in graphic design” veer me away from “not making a buck making goofy sketches in my Field Notes.” Been doing more and more of the latter, and LOVING it.

Of course, you’ll see these drawings peppered all over my instagram, complete with the long-winded captions I’m know for. I let it fly on there. Check them out here.

Drawing In My Field Notes

I always have my latest Field Notes memo book close by. Either in my chest pocket, in my possibles bag or near my left hand in the cockpit. As we say in the company, “I’m not writing it down to remember it later, I’m writing it down to remember it now.” Precisely.

Drawing On My iPad

I’m blown away by Adobe Fresco. I draw on my iPad each night in that program. Easy to use, easy to organize files and so cool how they simulate paint, graphite, marker, blending and human error. I was gifted the iPad by an awesome Adobe employee—who has to remain nameless for the obvious reasons—who had me prepped for some “Adobe Illustrator” beta testing coming up. Sadly, that call to duty never materialized and it was just me against the iPad, reeling off into oblivion at the mercy of my own devices. Serious shit like “playing solitaire on long flights,” “browsing eBay in bed,” and holy fuck, “drawing, drawing and more drawing” on the thing. From logo sketches working out iterations to attack in Adobe Illustrator, to portrait studies, to high-contrast Sharpie-ish renderings of sketches out of my Field Notes. Best part is this: I kind of can’t control it? Like, the meat, heat and size of my hand screws things up! And so it goes. Nothing in this world is permanent, and that’s the same law of the land on that tablet. That iPad reminds me each night to loosen up, go for it and accept the results. Forever thankful for this gift from my friend at Adobe. Thank you, Sir. I use this fucker EACH night!
