An Afternoon On Mackinac Island

Leigh and I headed to Mackinac Island yesterday, and it was a success.

First time I’ve been over there since 1991. Went mountain biking there with friends from my old pizza job, just after I got out of high school. If I remember correctly, we hammered around the island like seven times or something. It was intense.

Yesterday, not so intense. We caught the ferry over out of Mackinac City side at 10:30am, got to the island, rented a couple cruisers and hammered around the town, 3.5 miles to the east and back, up to the Grand Hotel, around the downtown and up to the fort. Good times / tired legs. Not used to things like “being outside” and “using my legs” and other sad truths.

Leigh spent some time on the island working about eight years back. We rode past her old restaurant and other haunts. She knows all about Mackinac Island. All sorts of tidbits.

The threat of rain was constant, and started to pour just as we got off the ferry back in Mackinac City. Perfect timing. It was good to see the place, and hang with the lady. Good times.

SCARED SHITLESS, MORE OR LESS: Minnesota Design Camp 2009, and well, I’m a “speaker” for the thing.

Gonna be fun as hell. Like 350 people in the crowd or something! Smart, creative type from the Minnesota design community. Yikes. Go easy on me, Minnesota! Or else.

BEST THING GOING ON TWITTER: “Your brother brought his baby over this morning. He told me it could stand. It couldn’t stand for shit. Just sat there. Big let down.”

A twit from the “Shit My Dad Says” Twitter pile. Best thing on there.

Colin Whyte and LIz Sukola sent this link in, and man, thanks. Just what I needed. “Laugh out loud” brilliance.

THAT WILLAMETTE WEEK HASN’T LOOKED THAT GOOD IN A LONG TIME: Kate Bingaman-Burt makes her mark! All kinds of kick-ass. (Janeen Smith had to bring this to my attention, as I’m out of the loop from all matters, “Portland.” I should be ashamed of my bad self. Thanks, Florida!)
