HOOKED ON THIS RECORD: I’ve never heard this Donald Fagen record. A big fan of Steely Dan, it’s like I stumbled on more of the stuff. Weird.

Oh yeah!! This album is the truth. And that album cover is one of the most gangster album covers of all-time. I used to host a radio show and WISHED that I had a set-up like Senor Fagen in this shot!!

Nice! I’m a big Steely Dan fan too. I definitely recommend all the Donald Fagen solo records.
Big fan of yours as well!

“Kamakyriad” also worth a listen.

For me it was the other way around: in the 80s I saw the video of “I.G.Y” on MTV and I was hooked on this kind of jazz. On this behalf I discovered Steely Dan. Another discovery was “Kamakiriad” on the radio in the 90s. Since then I’m eager for every release of an Donald Fagen solo album (Get all 4 of ‘em: The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat, Sunken Condos).

Imagine being 16, Dutch, and this album coming out. The only music considered cool at the time is UK Heavy Metal, damaging every eardrum around, or US disco, pumping through the speakers of every radio.
Then listening to this album gives you that unsettling feeling of not knowing whether the band is about to fall asleep or is just waking up.
32 years later and it is in the most played section of all albums ever owned.
Taste definitely develops over time.

I love The Nightfly. I christen all my new CD players with it.

My dad would play this album all the time when I was a kid. I absolutely love it.

Saw this on your site this morning. Went to do laundry. Went to record store while waiting. Saw this. Bought this. Currently in the studio painting to this. Long live Steely Dan!

Very good album. “New Frontier” is one of my favorite songs and videos of all time. The title track is also great. I also dig the shot on the back cover of the lone light on in the attic of the suburban house, the one person staying up late to listen to whatever the DJ was spinning and talking about.

I’m only a few minutes into your WTF interview and thought I’d look you up. Good stuff, man. And Maron is the real deal.

I too am a big WFT/ Marc Maron fan and listened to the episode featuring you and Draplin Design. Really great episode and I often wondered how some other types of guests (besides comedians, band members, movie folks, etc) would be on his show. I have to say , yours is a favorite now! Also saw your post about Donald Fagen. I got that album as a teenager (I am 47) and played it all the time and still love a few of those songs. Especially “the Nightfly”. Now i am going to check out your merchandise….

The Nightly is one of the best records out there and on a par with the best of The Dan’s work. It’s also one of the best recorded, which isn’t a surprise given their history. It’s given me many many hours of joy, played not too loud, late at night with something to drink and reminisce whilst it’s playing. Glad you’ve stumbled across it. It’ll be with you for ever now… Enjoy.
