Hockeytown, man. Set in 30,000pt “Crackhouse” by House Industries on the ice.

Lots of macho guys with mustaches, autographed jerseys, gold chains and white tennis shoes swilling Bud Light by the gulp saying shit like, “Holmstrom looked good in game five, eh?” Tough guys, kicking the weekend’s ass. Big fun, Detroit style. Leather Redwing jackets. Loose-fitting blue jeans. Foam fingers. Receding hairlines. Girls “partying” saying “Woo Hoo!” Etc.

We parked at Nero’s and caught the bus down to Joe Louis to watch the Wings get the shit kicked out of them by Phoenix. The crowd was pumped beyond belief up until that first Phoenix goal. Screaming unlistenable jock jams and cheering and booing. After Phoenix got up a couple goals, the crowd kinda turned on the Wings. Boo.

Big sport just isn’t my thing. I don’t know. I quit any form of organized sports right out of junior high and discovered art and other things. Things that sort of saved my life and opened up a big world for me. The deflated rivalries and inflated salaries and doped up muscles sour me too much.

Someday, I’d like to get season tickets to a baseball team. I’ve always enjoyed going to ballgames, with fond memories of Tiger Stadium summer outings. Tiger Stadium is now an empty lot. You can go to some Corporate ballpark down the street and enjoy high-priced beers and even higher interest loans. America!
