I’m heading back to Michigan today for a couple reasons:

01. To see my lady: Pretty Leigh.
02. To see my hound: Howling Gary.
03. To see my parents: Strong and Steady Mom and Dad, year 38.

Real excited to get back there and chill the hell out. Shit’s been busy.

The Seattle “AIGA The Hills Have Eyes” event went great. The deal sold out, and I’m betting 60 people were there or something. A packed house. We presented examples of our work, told our stories and then took some questions and yapped it up some. It was super fun and I got to meet a bunch of good folks, and tell the story of the DDC.

And, as always, any chance to hang with Styk and Jynn from the D.O.E. is always awesome. Heck yes.

I gave out a mountain of Field Notes, so, get to work, people!

I drove right back to Portland after the event, and punched in for the late shift on the DDC Factory Floor. 1am-4am. Yikes. Gargling the midnight oil.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for participating in the AIGA event last night at evo. I would like to get some tees and hats (especially the orange) to sell up here.

I would also like to purchase the field notes for the creative firm that I work at, Superbig Creative. We are all about promoting those that work within the small action sports industry (and talented and passionate people in general).

Out of the speakers, I identified most with your demeanor and way of thinking about design.

I would love to get the chance to collaborate with you and yours on projects in the future whether they be for profit, fun, philanthropy, education or mutual promotion.

Our website is temporarily just a landing page as we refresh the look and feel but should be up and running in a month.

Regarding the discussion about the sometimes conflictual relationship between real expression and art vs. design work that we do to pay the rent, I would like to push the conversation a little.

I think it is definitely the case that one can often do much good even if it does not solve world hunger.

It does not serve us to belittle the people we work with in the corporate world because they have struggles just like the rest of the planet that are just as meaningful. If you can lift someone up by what you do or say, whether it be for a small start up company like Coal or a corporation like Old Spice, I think you can go home each day and feel like what you’re doing serves the world and yourself and is exactly what you should be doing. Feeling guilty about it is more about one’s ego than anything. To be able to affect your immediate neighbors and those far away from you through personal interactions and design is much more than many people will ever have the chance to do. You never know just how far treating those around you with respect and care can spread just by starting with the people you interact with every day.

Again, thanks for your contribution - I saw that you were driving home to P-town last night so it is noted that you are dedicated to nourishing the small market and community that we’ve carved out in the snow industry and all the lifestyle companies that are associated with it.

Keep in touch - the Northwest should be collaborating more and more in the future. It can only be a positive things when minds get together to challenge and push each other to solve similar problems.

Sincerely,

Erin Phillips

Great hearing you talk about the biz- I’m a career advisor for college graphic design students- wish all the snowboard designer wantabes were there to listen to the passion present on the panel last night. I loved that this old “mom” could sit in the crowd and not feel uncomfortable. I’ll keep them out of Portland- but if you ever need some design help- let me know- and I’ll connect you with some good ones.

Hey Draplin,

It is always a complete pleasure filled with much awesomeness whenever we get to spend time with YOU. And looking at that picture, it is very clear that DDC would kick our collective DOE asses. You’re all serious business & we look like we enjoy getting whooped up on! ;)
